Now that summer is in full bloom, it is the perfect time to care for your plants so that you can enjoy a healthy, vibrant garden to sit in and soak up the sun.
Different plants require different levels of care so it is important to understand the right way to take care of your garden so that your plants can withstand all seasons.
Here is a list of five ways you can care for your garden this summer.
Water Properly
It is important to only water your plants as much or as little is recommended for that specific species. Overwatering can lead to fungi growth, leaf spots and unhealthy plants. Ensure that your garden is well-watered but not soaking, and avoid wetting the foliage. Water directly onto the soil instead. Generally, it is better to water plant6s early in the morning or in the evening. This is the time when the soil is cooler. If you water plants on a hot day, more water will evaporate quicker.
Destroy Your Weeds
Weeds are garden killers. They can harbour pests and diseases so it is critical that you remove weeds from your garden. One way to prevent weeds from growing is by planting vegetables, flowers and shrubs at the recommended closing spaces, as weeds love to grow in the spaces between plants.
Lawn Care
Different types of soil require different kinds of care:
Clay Soil - add organic material such as compost or peat moss. Loosen the soil and water as fast as it absorbs the water. Clay soil tends to absorb water very slowly
Sandy soil - Add organic matter that will supplement the soil or else the water will run through it too quickly and the plants won’t be able to absorb it
Loam soil - This soil absorbs water easily and stores it for the plants, so it is the best kind of soil you can have
Pest and Disease Control
Pets and diseases are one of the biggest garden killers so preventing them is critical for your plants. Some of them are attracted to weeds so by removing weeds, you are also preventing other garden pests.
Diseases are often caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses. Fungal diseases can be prevented by avoiding overwatering your garden and bacterial / viral ones can be prevented by using clean pruning and weeding tools.
Protection from Animals
Wild animals and domesticated pets can also be a danger to your garden. This can usually be prevented by installing an efficient garden protector, like a wire fence.
