A Beginner’s Guide to Hydraulic Systems and Components

Have you ever wondered how heavy machinery is able to operate so effectively? The answer may lie in hydraulics. Hydraulics are an effective and powerful method of operating large machinery which is widely used in many industries. Our blog is here to uncover the basics of hydraulics so that you can understand how these machines operate. To learn more, keep on reading our blog.

What Is A Hydraulic System?

If we're getting down to the basics, a hydraulic system is a type of mechanical arrangement that uses liquid, under immense pressure to generate force and motion. Unlike electric systems, hydraulic systems rely on fluids, such as oil or water to transmit power. With liquids being unable to compress, this makes them highly efficient for heavy duty tasks.

The basic principle of hydraulics is derived from Pascal's Law, which states that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally throughout the fluid in all directions. What this means is that the force generated through hydraulics can be input several times and controlled effectively.

How Do Hydraulic Systems Work?

Hydraulic systems work through the following steps:

●     Input - Force will be applied to a piston inside a pump, which pressurises the hydraulic fluid.

●     Movement - Once the fluid is pressurised, it travels through pipes or tubes, carrying the force that has been applied to the pump. The fluid movement is essentially how the system works, transferring the force.

●     Control Valves - The control valves will manage the direction of the hydraulic fluid, including how much fluid moves through and to which part of the system. Pressure can be decreased, controlled and changed depending on the task at hand.

●     Hydraulic Cylinder Or Motor - The pressurised fluid will eventually reach the hydraulic cylinder or motos, where it will be converted into mechanical energy.

●     Output - This mechanical energy can now be used in equipment and for various different applications.

Applications Of Hydraulics

There are several industries and sectors in which hydraulic power is used. Hydraulic power offers many benefits, such as safety, control and superior lifting power, making it useful in various applications, such as:

●     Automotive Industries - Power steering, brakes and suspension systems also rely on hydraulic pressure.

●     Manufacturing - Manufacturing industries with large machinery and heavy lifting needs also require hydraulic power.

●     Construction - Lots of construction equipment, including cranes, excavators, bulldozers and other large equipment relies on hydraulic power for movement.
