How To Use Topsoil Effectively In Your Garden

If you’ve got a green thumb, or are simply looking to breathe some life back into your backyard, using topsoil to enhance your garden could be a great place to start!

Why Should I Use Topsoil In My Garden?

Topsoil is a great source of organic nutrients for the plants in your garden. It’s great for vegetation, flower beds and even your lawn! It’s widely used in landscaping projects, however you can use it to elevate the plants in your garden.

People often wonder, what’s the difference between topsoil and compost? Compost and topsoil have similar qualities, however, compost is more of a growing medium for your plants. The damp conditions in which it is developed also mean it is broken down a lot quicker than topsoil. However, both materials are rich in nutrients and help your plants to grow.

There are various reasons why top soil can be beneficial to your garden’s health. Keep reading to find out more!

Plants

If you’re trying to rejuvenate your flower beds or shrubbery, using topsoil could be the answer! Replenishing the nutrients that your plants are getting is a great way to help them grow. If your garden has ensured a cold and harsh winter, a fresh layer of topsoil could make all the difference to your plants.

Drainage

If you’re noticing that the drainage in your garden is not particularly great, you might want to consider using topsoil to help with this. You might be experiencing puddles of water, due to a densely packed soil. This leaves water unable to penetrate the soil and it is then left sitting on top.

By using topsoil to break up your densely packed soil, you are allowing the roots of your plants to get better circulation and nutrients.

Lawn

Your lawn might have been affected by poor drainage in your garden or been subject to some fair wear and tear. If you’ve got a few patches or uneven areas of your lawn, you may want to use topsoil to help rejuvenate your grass!

A few inches of topsoil and compost can make all the difference in your lawn, helping it to grow back more healthy!

Getting The Most Out Of Your Topsoil

There are a few ways to get the most out of your topsoil:

  • Spring is the perfect time to use topsoil, as it gives time for your plants and lawn to absorb the nutrients and start looking healthy again

  • Make sure you have enough depth to add the appropriate amount of topsoil for your plants (5-12”)

  • Ensure the pH of your soil is somewhere between 5.5 and 7.5 to make sure your plants aren’t being affected by the acidity or alkaline
