Simple Ways To Improve Drainage In Your Garden

Poor drainage can cause any number of problems, from mould and foundation damage to soggy ground in the garden. Fortunately, it is usually possible to create better drainage, if you’re willing to put in a little work.

Install Gutters

If you don’t currently have gutters, you should certainly add them to your home. This allows the water from the roof to run to where you direct it, instead of pouring down the sides of the building. When water simply flows over the edge of the roof, it is too close to the foundation and can seep through the concrete.

Create A Dry River Bed

A dry river is both decorative and also improves the drainage in your garden. You simply need to dig a trench in the ground, preferably one that mimics the meandering of a real river. Tamp the soil and then lay landscaping cloth, gravel and river rocks to fill the dry river. This gives water somewhere to go when it begins to saturate your garden. With the deeper design and rocks inside the trench, the water will gradually seep away into the soil, without making your entire garden soggy.

Slope The Ground

The direction of the slopes around the buildings on your property has an effect on the saturation of the ground. You want to avoid sloping toward the buildings, of course, but you may need to work on the entire property to keep water moving in the right direction. Usually, this requires plant hire and using large machines to change the terrain.

Build A Dry Well

A drywell is just like it sounds, a well that is not meant to bring up water but to let it absorb into the soil faster. To make one, you’ll need to dig roughly four feet down into the soil. The dry well may need to be 6” around or more, depending on how much water you need to drain. Fill it with gravel and allow the water to drain into it.

If you have a drain pipe from the roof, you can run it to the drywell, within a trench filled with gravel. This way, any water can easily sink into the soil. To avoid a soggy spot, the water is rapidly displaced to the drywell, which means it will soak into the soil from deep below the surface.

Most of these methods involve some sort of digging and this means you either need to rent a plant machine such as a mini excavator or own one yourself. Either way, you will need to use machines.
