Tips For Managing A Construction Project In The Winter

Construction work in general is usually a tough task. After all, you have to worry about health and safety standards, long days, and heavy loads. So, couple that with the harsh realities of the British winter and you might have an incredibly difficult project. There are of course many ways to mitigate the struggles of this period and we’re sure you know many of them by now. But are there a few things you can do that perhaps you haven't thought of before? Keep reading this blog to find out.

We’re sure you’ve been there before, your site is soaked through and the mud is almost over your boots. You’ve got two weeks left to finish on time and the rain just won’t stop. This is the image that many of our builders and construction workers have to deal with every year when the winter kicks in and frankly it can be incredibly difficult. Yes, we all expect a certain degree of weather-related tribulations when we work outdoors in the UK. However, surely there must be more that we can do to make our lives a little easier.

Cover your walkways

Mud is by far one of the largest issues which builders and construction workers face in the winter and tackling this issue can be extremely difficult. Once the site has become even slightly muddy the moisture from these areas spreads and before you know it your whole site will be a sodden mess. This can make work incredibly difficult and even slightly dangerous. So, if you lay down some metal or plastic mats along the key walkways and thoroughfares you can ensure that your site stays clean and dry.

Use powerful lighting

The British winter isn’t just wet and cold we’re sure if you’re reading this blog you’re only too familiar with the frustrating lack of light during the winter months. When the sun starts setting just after four in the afternoon it can be difficult to continue working without it being dangerous or unproductive. This is why you should invest in a few high-powered lighting options so you can still see what you’re doing when the sun sets.

Excavator hire

We’re sure at some point during your project you’re going to need an excavator to clear your site and prepare it for the next stages. Of course, you may choose to purchase your own machinery however this may be a huge mistake. Looking after your plant machinery during the winter months is extremely difficult as the cold weather drastically affects the mechanics. So, if you hire your excavator you can ensure that your machinery will start and work every time and you can get on with the job at hand.
