Winter is a time when many stay indoors while their gardens remain barren. Just because the weather has turned cold and the trees have lost their leaves, this doesn’t mean that your garden has to look barren, too. Your garden deserves some TLC all year round, winter included.
Of course, many plants and vegetables aren’t hardy enough to withstand the harsh conditions of the colder months, which is why we’ve listed some plants and vegetables you can plant this winter to utilise your garden space to its full potential, as well as some other top tips to help it through the frosty weather.
Onions
One of the best vegetables to plant in the winter is onions. This is because they are extremely hardy and their seeds are able to survive in cold, damp soil - this is known as winter dormancy, meaning they know to postpone their growth until conditions are favourable, allowing them to establish in the ground then grow efficiently as winter becomes spring and the temperatures become milder.
It is even a tradition for many avid show-growers to plant their onion seeds on Boxing day, allowing them to really bulk up before crop in the winter.
Plant your onion seeds in enriched, organic soil, ideally in an area that has lots of sun exposure.
Snowdrops
As the name so appropriately suggests, snowdrops are delicate plants with a slightly droopy white flower that blooms annually in the winter.
If you wish to grow your snowdrops from seeds, unfortunately the window has passed for this year, as they are best grown in early spring or late autumn. However, if you do wish to have these flowers adorning your garden throughout the winter, you can buy potted snowdrops and plant these directly into your garden.
Whether a white winter is in store for us or not this year, snowdrops are the next best way to create a magical blanket of metaphorical snow.
Top Tips for Winter Gardening
Here are some of our top tips for other ways you can care for your garden this winter.
Pruning: Now that all the leaves have fallen off your trees, it is the perfect time to prune your trees. Cutting back branches helps to keep your trees neat, avoid excessive shade in your garden when the leaves have grown back and reduce the likelihood of rotting and disease that can spread to healthier branches.
Topsoil: Remove any thatch and moss from your lawn and create some drainage holes, then cover with a layer of topsoil that has been evenly raked, followed by some lawn feed. This ensures your lawn receives enough nutrients throughout the winter, allowing it to stay luscious for the spring and summer.
Compost: Now is a great time to empty your compost bin and use it around your garden, leaving your compost bin ready to collect your garden waste for the year ahead.
